The hypergrowth of digital infrastructure doesn’t align with planetary boundaries and globally agreed on targets for climatic change reduction. The Permacomputing Playground is a knowledge platform and toolkit designed by and for cultural organizations to transition toward sustainable practices of digital technology. Drawing from the principles of permacomputing (as coined by a predominantly Dutch community of designers and theorists), the playground complements it with playful culture for fast prototyping, collective construction and broad engagement.
During 2 years, this playground acts as an engaging multiplayer game between French & Dutch institutions, researchers, artists, designers and public audiences aimed at creating a space for critical practices in the Global North situatedness.
The playground materializes in local case studies, workshops, self-hosted collaborative tools, public interventions, publications, exhibitions and a collective video game commission in a methodological framework derived from play studies.
